Vicksburg Surrenders
After a six-week seige at the hands of Ulysses S. Grant’s Union forces, Confederate General John Pemberton surrendered Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863. Pemberton had tried valiantly to hold his position, but his starving troops were outnumbered by Grant’s tenacious bluecoats. With this important victory, the Union was now only one step away from controlling the entire Mississippi River.
